Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Real Madrid from Manchester United is by far the most expensive of all time. In fact there is only one defensive positioned player on the list. Increasingly clubs would spend £20 million or more on players that a few years ago would have cost less than £10 million.

This transfer frenzy came to a peak in 2009 when Real Madrid spent a fortune on Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo and AC Milan star Kaka. This remained the most expensive transfer of all time for 8 years until the summer of 2009 when this massive transfer record was broken 3 times in quick succession.

As European football clubs started receiving more TV rights money, prize money and clubs such as Man City gained large foreign investment, players wages and transfer fees sky rocketed. In fact the Portugease players transfer fee is a full £23.5 million higher than the next closes, which was enough for Man City to buy Davil Silva in 2010 and for Manchester United to buy Wayne Rooney in 2004.

Of the top 10 most expensive transfers of all time, nine of the players are strikers or attacking midfielders. The Premier League club have already been said to have once offered AC Milan £90 million for Kaka and so this massive transfer fee record may well be broken in the next transfer period.
